Ledro is a mountain valley just west of Riva, reached through the tunnel on the SS240 or, for walkers and cyclists, up the old Ponale road carved into the cliff. The municipality was formed in 2010 from the villages around the lake and along the valley: Molina, Pieve, Mezzolago, Bezzecca, Tiarno and others.
At its centre, at 655 metres, Lago di Ledro covers just over two square kilometres, with lawned beaches at Pur, Besta and Pieve, pedal boats and water clear enough for SUP and kayak. When the lake was lowered in 1929 for the Riva hydroelectric plant, more than 12,000 wooden piles appeared along the southern shore; the Bronze Age settlement is now part of the UNESCO site of prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps, explained in the museum at Molina.
Further up the valley lie the small Lago d'Ampola nature reserve, the Gorg d'Abiss waterfall near Tiarno di Sotto and the MTB and hiking routes towards Tremalzo. Ledro suits families, lake swimmers who prefer cooler water, and hikers and bikers looking for quieter trails.

Lago di Ledro
Mountain lake at 655 m, just over 2 km² and up to 47 m deep, used for swimming, sailing, SUP and picnics on its lawned shores.
Museo delle Palafitte del Lago di Ledro
Museum at Molina di Ledro with reconstructed huts and finds from the pile-dwelling village of 2200–1350 BC, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

Getting there and around
- By car
- From Riva del Garda take the SS240 west through the tunnel into the valley; from Milan and Brescia the approach is via Tormini and the Val Sabbia.
- Train and bus
- The nearest station is Rovereto, with buses to Riva and onward connections to the Ledro villages. On foot or by bike, the Ponale trail climbs from Riva to the valley.
- Parking
- In Pieve di Ledro there is parking between Via Imperiale and Via Nuova near the info point; the Lago d'Ampola visitor centre is reached by boardwalk from its own car park.

Can you swim in Lago di Ledro?
Yes. Pur, Besta and Pieve have lawned beaches with gentle entries, and in summer several have lifeguards from 10:30 to 17:30. The water is cooler than Lake Garda's because the lake sits at 655 metres.
How do you get from Riva del Garda to Lago di Ledro?
By car or bus along the SS240 through the tunnel, or on foot or by bike along the old Ponale road, which climbs from the edge of Riva above the lake.
Can you still see the Ledro pile dwellings?
