Moniga del Garda calls itself the town of Chiaretto, the pale rosé of the Valtenesi made from the local Groppello grape with only a brief contact with the skins – a method credited to Pompeo Molmenti. Since 2008 Moniga has hosted Italia in Rosa, a national festival of rosé wines, and the slopes behind the village are lined with small wineries and olive groves.
The historic core is the Castello di Moniga, a late-Romanesque walled enclosure that was built as a refuge for villagers in times of danger rather than as a lord's residence; it still has houses inside and a park with lake views.
Below, the shore has a small harbour, Porto Moniga, and a row of pebble beaches such as Spiaggia Preara and San Michele. Moniga is small and residential, a good pick for wine lovers, couples and families who want a calm beach base between Desenzano and Salò.
