Desenzano is the largest town on Lake Garda, with about 29,000 residents, and the south-western shore's hub for trains, boats and nightlife.
The centre wraps around the Porto Vecchio, a small harbour enlarged under Venice and crossed by a Venetian-style footbridge, with Palazzo Todeschini and café tables along its quays. Behind it rise the Duomo di Santa Maria Maddalena, which holds a Last Supper by Giandomenico Tiepolo, and a castle of early-medieval origin that stages open-air shows in summer.
A few streets away, the Villa Romana preserves 4th-century mosaics of hunting and grape-harvest scenes, and the Museo Rambotti displays what is described as the world's oldest plough, found in prehistoric lake settlements.
Pebble beaches such as Desenzanino and Spiaggia d'Oro line the shore, and the municipality stretches east to Rivoltella and inland to San Martino della Battaglia. Desenzano suits visitors without a car, young crowds and anyone who wants a real town rather than a resort.

- The A4 motorway has two exits in the municipality, Desenzano and Sirmione.
- Train and bus
- Desenzano del Garda station is on the Milan–Venice railway and has a tourist infopoint; it is also the nearest station for Sirmione. Navigazione Laghi boats and fast services leave from the harbour for Sirmione and the whole lake up to Riva.
- By boat
- Desenzano is the southern terminus of the lake network and the seat of Navigazione Lago di Garda's operations office; both ordinary boats and fast services (servizi rapidi, supplement payable) run from here to Riva. No car ferry.
