Peschiera del Garda stands where the Mincio leaves the lake, at the south-east corner between Sirmione and Lazise.
The old town sits inside a star-shaped Venetian fortress surrounded by water: the river is split into channels around the walls, and the Canale di Mezzo runs straight through the centre, lined with moored boats. The fortifications, with Porta Verona and Porta Brescia from the 16th century, have been part of the UNESCO site of Venetian defence works since 2017, and prehistoric pile-dwelling remains nearby carry a second UNESCO listing.
The railway station on the Milan–Venice line makes Peschiera the easiest lake town to reach without a car, and it is the shuttle stop for Gardaland. Cyclists use it as the start of the asphalt Mincio cycle path to Mantova and of the lakeside paths toward Sirmione and Garda.
You can also paddle a canoe around the bastions. Peschiera suits travellers without a car, cyclists and families heading for the theme parks.
