Bardolino is the wine town of the east shore: its name is on the light red Bardolino DOC, the Bardolino Superiore DOCG and Chiaretto rosé, grown on the moraine hills behind the lake around Calmasino and Cisano.
The lakefront is long and flat, and the Rivalunga shore – about 3 km of maritime pines, lawns, fine gravel and pebbles between Punta Cornicello and Garda – is one of the most used public beaches on the lake. In the compact centre two churches are worth a detour: San Zeno, a 9th-century Carolingian building on a Latin-cross plan, and Romanesque San Severo with medieval frescoes.
Wine sets the calendar, with the Chiaretto celebrations in spring, the Festa dell'Uva e del Vino in early October and the Festa del Novello in November, while the Zeni family's free wine museum and an olive oil museum explain the two local crops.
A lakeside cycle path and the 100 km Cammino del Bardolino invite longer rides. Good for wine lovers, cyclists and families; the town also hosted the 2004 road cycling world championships.
