Garda takes its name from the Lombard word warda, a guard post, and in turn gave it to the whole lake. The fortress that stood on the Rocca di Garda above town is where Queen Adelaide of Burgundy was held prisoner in the 10th century; today the hill is a short hike with views over the bay.
The town curves around a wide gulf on the east shore, and the Lungolago Regina Adelaide runs past the harbour, cafés and the 14th-century Palazzo dei Capitani before continuing south as a lakeside walk to Bardolino. North of the centre, the headland of Punta San Vigilio holds the Renaissance Villa Guarienti, a tiny harbour, a historic inn and the Baia delle Sirene beach in the olive groves, and the woods of Monte Luppia hide more than 200 rocks with prehistoric carvings.
With frequent ATV buses and one of the busiest boat stops on this shore, Garda is an easy base without a car. It suits families, walkers and first-time visitors.

- By car, the A22 exit Affi – Lago di Garda Sud is a short drive away.
- Train and bus
- The nearest railway stations are Peschiera del Garda and Verona Porta Nuova: ATV line 483 runs from Peschiera via Lazise and Bardolino, lines 162–165 come from Verona, and line 484 continues north to Malcesine and Riva. Garda is also a major Navigazione Laghi stop.
- By boat
- One of the busiest stops on the Desenzano–Riva line, with frequent boats north to Malcesine and Riva, south to Bardolino, Lazise and Sirmione, and some fast services with supplement.
- Parking
- The historic centre is a pedestrian area with an access permit system for authorised vehicles; the Baia delle Sirene at Punta San Vigilio has a large paid car park among the olive trees.
