Costermano sul Garda sits on the hills behind Garda, a rural municipality of olive groves, vineyards and small villages rather than a lakefront resort.
It is made up of Costermano itself and the hamlets of Albarè, Castion Veronese, Marciaga and Gazzoli, with villas such as Villa Torri-Giuliari and its old oaks scattered between them. The parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate dates from 1497 and holds work by Brusasorci; at Castion the Romanesque church of San Verolo stands among fields, and Marciaga has the sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso and rock engravings.
On the edge of the village lies the German war cemetery, where about 22,000 soldiers who died in Italy in the Second World War are buried; it was inaugurated in 1967.
The Valle dei Mulini, a protected valley of streams and old mills, and the Giro dei Vigneti route suit walkers and cyclists. Costermano works for those who prefer a quiet hillside base a few minutes' drive from the beaches and boats of Garda.
