Lazise is a compact walled town on the south-eastern shore, between Bardolino and Peschiera. Its Scaliger walls still ring the centre, and the Castello Scaligero stands at the southern edge beside a fortified harbour.
Locals are proud of a date: in 983 Emperor Otto II granted the community the right to fortify itself and run its own fishing and trade, which is why Lazise calls itself the first free commune in Italy. The old port is the heart of the town, framed by the Venetian customs house (Dogana Veneta) and the small Romanesque church of San Nicolò.
Beyond the walls the municipality spreads over moraine hills with vineyards and the hamlets of Pacengo and Colà, where the Villa dei Cedri thermal park has warm open-air pools. Campsites line the shore, and the Canevaworld parks (Movieland and Caneva Aquapark) are close by, so Lazise works well for families who want a walkable old town plus a pool, a beach and a theme park within a short drive.
