Castelnuovo del Garda lies just inland from the south-east corner of the lake, 18 km west of Verona, and is best known as the home of Gardaland. The theme park opened in 1975 and has grown into a resort with around 38 attractions, eight roller coasters, a SEA LIFE aquarium, the LEGOLAND Water Park and three themed hotels.

The municipality is more than the park, though. Its centre is marked by the 14th-century Torre Viscontea, which also appears on the town's coat of arms, and the hamlets of Cavalcaselle, Oliosi, Ronchi, Sandrà and Camalavicina are scattered over the moraine hills.

Those hills saw Risorgimento battles: Austrian troops burned the town in 1848, and at Oliosi a museum recalls the soldiers who cut up their regimental flag in 1866 so it would not be captured.

A short stretch of shoreline between Peschiera and Lazise, with Lido Campanello, gives the town its own lake access. Castelnuovo suits families on a theme-park break and anyone curious about the 19th-century wars.

By car: Castelnuovo is a few minutes from the Peschiera del Garda exit of the A4 motorway.
Train and bus: The nearest main railway station is Peschiera del Garda on the Milan–Venice line, where a shuttle bus runs to Gardaland. ATV buses connect the area with Verona and the lake towns.
