Dro sits in the Sarca valley a few kilometres north of Arco, where the valley floor is buried under the Marocche: a vast chaos of limestone blocks left by post-glacial landslides, now a nature reserve with scattered dinosaur footprints discovered in 2000.
The village itself is compact, built around Piazza Repubblica; a short walk climbs to the chapel of Sant'Abbondio, the scene each May of a re-enactment of a vow made after the plague of 1630. At Fies, an old hydroelectric plant has been turned into Centrale Fies, a centre for contemporary performance, and in the hamlet of Ceniga an old stone bridge crosses the Sarca. Next door, in the separate municipality of Drena, a castle tower looks over the Marocche and the Rio Sallagoni gorge.
The limestone walls on both sides of the valley are a big part of the Garda Trentino climbing scene. Dro suits climbers, cyclists on the flat Sarca valley routes towards Lago di Cavedine, and people who prefer a working village to a resort.

Riserva Naturale Marocche di Dro
Landscape of huge landslide boulders on the valley floor, a protected reserve with dinosaur footprints about 190 million years old.
Centrale Fies
Former hydroelectric power station at Fies, now a centre for contemporary theatre and performance and a notable piece of industrial architecture.
Sant'Abbondio
Hilltop chapel with mid-16th-century frescoes, reached on an easy walk from Piazza Repubblica and the setting of the Voto di Sant'Abbondio re-enactment in late May.
Ponte romano di Ceniga
Stone bridge over the Sarca at Ceniga, of uncertain age, rebuilt in 1719 after a flood and again in 1868.
Castel Drena
Castle ruin just above Dro in neighbouring Drena, 12th-century in origin, whose 25-metre tower can be climbed for a view over the Marocche and the Sarca valley.
Getting there and around
- By car
- From the north, leave the A22 at Trento Nord and follow the SS45bis south through the Valle dei Laghi and the Sarca valley; from the south, exit at Rovereto Sud/Lago di Garda Nord and drive towards Arco, continuing north up the valley.
- Train and bus
- The nearest railway stations are Trento and Rovereto, both with Trentino Trasporti bus connections to Garda Trentino. A cycle path runs along the Sarca from Arco towards Fies.
- Parking
- In Dro there is parking on Via Battisti, Piazza Garibaldi and Via Capitelli, the side streets around Piazza Repubblica.

What are the Marocche di Dro?

Is Dro good for climbing?
Yes, it lies in the heart of the Sarca valley crags that make Garda Trentino a climbing destination. Italy's hardest route, Excalibur (9b+), is in neighbouring Drena, and Arco with its shops and guides is a few kilometres south.
